WILLIAM GILL, hardware merchant, Meadville,
was born January 28, 1842, in Meadville, Penn., son of William and Maria
E. (Mead) Gill, who were both natives of this county, the former of Scotch
and the latter of English descent. William Gill, Sr., was a house
plasterer by trade, but in later life was a dry goods and grocery
merchant. Our subject, who was the fourth child, was educated at Allegheny
College, and in the Commercial College at Pittsburgh, Penn. In early life
he acted as clerk, and in 1860 he embarked in the hardware business, in
which he still continues. Mr. Gill was married in 1874 to Blanche S.,
daughter of Hiram Stowe and a sister of Hon. E. H. Stowe, of Pittsburgh,
Penn. They have four children, viz.: Katherine C., David Donald, Robert
Stowe and Martha Stowe. In politics Mr. Gill is a Democrat.
