W. B. Bartholomew

W. B. BARTHOLOMEW, member of city council, was born at Bath,
Pa., July 12, 1860, the son of the late William and Christianna (Stewart)
Bartholomew. After having received his education in the public schools, he
at fourteen years of age went to Easton, Pa., where be learned the
furniture finishing trade with A. D. Cooke. At eighteen he entered the
employ of Clark, Thomas & Co., furniture manufacturers, in Philadelphia,
where he remained four years. In 1882 he came to Allentown, working for
Schlegel, Ziegenfus & Co. for about a year, when he went to Utica, where
he was employed by M. B. DeLong, the largest retail furniture dealer in
central New York. Four years later he engaged in the furniture and
undertaking business at Lewisburg, Pa., until 1893, when he returned to
Allentown, residing here ever since. Following a connection of nine years
with the Kramer Music House, he formed a partnership with George L. Eck,
under the firm name of Bartholomew & Eck, painting contractors. In
February, 1910, Mr. Bartholomew was elected to the lower branch of city
councils from the Tenth Ward, and was re-elected two years later. In 1915,
under the commission form of government, he was elected to city council,
receiving the highest vote of all the candidates running for the same
office. He is in charge of the department of streets and public
improvements. Mr. Bartholomew is essentially a man of the people, and in
his public service has shown marked ability and a high sense of duty,
coupled with local pride and a progressive spirit. He is a member of the
following organizations: Pioneer Fire Co., No. 9; Fair Council, No. 791,
0. of I. A. (financial secretary for twenty-two consecutive years);
Liberty Bell Circle, No. 94, B. of A.; Woodmen of the World; Daughters of
America; Order of Moose; Clover Club.
