W. B. Bartholomew

W. B. BARTHOLOMEW, member of city council, was born at Bath, Pa., July 12, 1860, the son of the late William and Christianna (Stewart) Bartholomew. After having received his education in the public schools, he at fourteen years of age went to Easton, Pa., where be learned the furniture finishing trade with A. D. Cooke. At eighteen he entered the employ of Clark, Thomas & Co., furniture manufacturers, in Philadelphia, where he remained four years. In 1882 he came to Allentown, working for Schlegel, Ziegenfus & Co. for about a year, when he went to Utica, where he was employed by M. B. DeLong, the largest retail furniture dealer in central New York. Four years later he engaged in the furniture and undertaking business at Lewisburg, Pa., until 1893, when he returned to Allentown, residing here ever since. Following a connection of nine years with the Kramer Music House, he formed a partnership with George L. Eck, under the firm name of Bartholomew & Eck, painting contractors. In February, 1910, Mr. Bartholomew was elected to the lower branch of city councils from the Tenth Ward, and was re-elected two years later. In 1915, under the commission form of government, he was elected to city council, receiving the highest vote of all the candidates running for the same office. He is in charge of the department of streets and public improvements. Mr. Bartholomew is essentially a man of the people, and in his public service has shown marked ability and a high sense of duty, coupled with local pride and a progressive spirit. He is a member of the following organizations: Pioneer Fire Co., No. 9; Fair Council, No. 791, 0. of I. A. (financial secretary for twenty-two consecutive years); Liberty Bell Circle, No. 94, B. of A.; Woodmen of the World; Daughters of America; Order of Moose; Clover Club.
