Martin H. Strauss

|
MARTIN H. STRAUSS, one of the city’s leading merchants, is the
son of Thomas and Eliza (Keck) Strauss, and was born in Allen Township,
Northampton County, Pa., May 5, 1864. He received his education in the
public schools of Allentown, after which he became an assistant to his
father in conducting a flour mill. In 1886 he entered the employ of A. J.
Kleppinger, who was then engaged in the wholesale grocery business at
145-147 Hamilton Street, Allentown. Mr. Strauss continued his employment
until Mr. Kleppinger died in 1887, and in 1888 organized the firm of
Strauss & Kleppinger. In 1898 he succeeded to sole ownership, and in 1909
the Martin H. Strauss Company was incorporated. The concern has enjoyed a
steady and substantial growth, and in 1912 erected one of the largest
grocery houses in the State at the corner of Second and Foundry Streets.
Mr. Strauss is a representative citizen and a successful business man of
high standing. He is a member of Zion Reformed Church, In 1890 he married
Ida M., daughter of Ephraim and Mary Knauss, of Allentown.
