Hon. James L. Schaadt

|
HON. JAMES L. SCHAADT, man of affairs and former mayor of
Allentown, was born December 21, 1856, in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh
County, Pa., the son of Captain David and Caroline S. Schaadt. He was
educated in the township schools until his parents removed to Allentown in
1868, when he attended the Allentown Academy, public schools of Allentown,
Muhlenberg Preparatory School and Muhlenberg College, being graduated in
1874. Taught public schools and studied law with Thomas B. Metzger, Esq.,
of Allentown. Admitted to courts of Lehigh County, April 10, 1878; later
to the courts of Northampton, Carbon and Berks Counties; to the State
Supreme Court, the Superior Court and the United States Courts. Former
county solicitor, chairman of Democratic County Committee, district
attorney of Lehigh County and mayor of Allentown. He is actively engaged
in the practice of law and is president of the Lehigh County Bar
Association, a member of the Pennsylvania State Bar Association and the
American Bar Association. During the Homestead riots in 1890 was captain
of Company D, Fourth Regiment, N. G. P., and distinguished himself as a
soldier and officer. Mr. Schaadt was also the author of the history of the
Allen Infantry, one of the five Pennsylvania companies that went to
Washington on April 18, 1861, and became the Capitol’s First Defenders. He
is a member of St. John’s Reformed Church; Sons of Veterans, G. A. R., and
is president of the Liberty Fire Company. He is also a trustee of the
Allentown Hospital and a former president of the Associated Charities. He
is a member of many other fraternal and social organizations. On November
10, 1857, Mr. Schaadt married Julie Leberman, of Bamberg, Germany, a woman
of rare legal talent and accomplishments. Mr. and Mrs. Schaadt are lovers
of outdoor sports and travel extensively.
