J. W. Hutchison. A well-known member of the
bar at Butler is J. W. Hutchison, who, in the last thirty-seven years, has
built up an honorable and substantial practice here, and has been one of
the citys useful and representative men. He was born in Parker Township
Butler County, Pennsylvania, June 17, 1864, the son of James G. and Susan
(Daubenspeck) Hutchison.
James G. Hutchison was a native of Parker Township, the son of William and
Esther (Gibson) Hutchison, a prominent farmer of that township. James G.
Hutchison engaged in farming and during the Civil War enlisted in Company
G, One Hundred and Thirty-fourth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was a
prominent man in his section of the state. He died in 1864 and is buried
in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Parkers Landing, Pennsylvania. His wife,
Susan (Daubenspeck) Hutchison, was the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Barnhardt)
Daubenspeck, natives of Butler County, Pennsylvania, now deceased and
buried in the German Reform Cemetery, at Fairview, Pennsylvania. To James
G. and Susan (Daubenspeck) Hutchison two children were born: Emma, who
died in infancy; and J. W., the subject of this sketch. After the death of
her husband, Mrs. Hutchison married Shryock Harper, a hardware merchant in
business at North Washington, Pennsylvania, and to this union three
children were born: (1) Rev. Edgar P. Harper, a Methodist minister, at
Kittanning, Pennsylvania; (2) Curtis M., deceased; and Orie P., married
Rev. H. O. MacDonald, a Presbyterian minister. He is deceased and is
buried at Portersville, Pennsylvania. His widow resides in Chester, West
Virginia.
Mr. Hutchison received his education in the public schools of Parker and
Washington Township, Butler County, and was graduated from North
Washington Academy. Entering the Westminster College, he was graduated in
the class, of 1887, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He then came to
Butler, Pennsylvania, and read law in the office of Attorney S. F. Bowser.
On December 2, 1889, he was admitted to the bar, and immediately began the
practice of his profession.
In 1889 Mr. Hutchison was married to Miss Ida M. Campbell, a daughter of
John H. and Sidney Jane (Campbell) Campbell. Mr. Campbell was born in
Canada, and his wife in Butler County, Pennsylvania. He was an oil well
contractor for many years. He is deceased and buried in Kittanning,
Pennsylvania. His widow resides in Butler. To Mr. and Mrs. Hutchison three
children were born: Eileen, deceased; James Karl, died at the age of four
years; and James Paul, resides in Chicago. He is a veteran of the World
War, having enlisted in the U. S. Signal Corps. He sailed for France in
November, 1917, and was with the Army of Occupation after the armistice
was signed. He returned to the United States in August, 1919. He now has
charge of a store in Chicago, Illinois. Mrs. Hutchison died in 1900 and is
buried in North Cemetery, Butler. In 1903 Mr. Hutchison was married
(second) to Miss Helen Victor. She died in August, 1924, and is buried in
North Cemetery, Butler.
Mr. Hutchison served as referee in bankruptcy for Butler County from
February 2, 1899, to February 2, 1923. He is a member of the Butler County
Bar Association, and has been treasurer of this association since its
organization. In fraternal circles he is also well known, holding
membership with the Knights of Pythias, past chancellor; past grand
chancellor of the State of Pennsylvania; past supreme representative of
the world; president of the Pythian Home Association of Pennsylvania;
Knights of Malta, past commander; and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In
politics Mr. Hutchison is a Republican. He takes an active interest in all
civic matters and has served as a member of the School Board of Butler.
