George T. Ettinger, Ph. D.

|
GEORGE T. ETTINGER, Ph. D., dean of Muhlenberg College, and
professor of Latin language and literature, and pedagogy in that
institution, has deservedly achieved wider fame at once as a scholar,
educator, writer and lecturer than any other native born Allentonian. He
is an indefatigable student and a past master in his profession, as well
as a public-spirited citizen of the highest ideals. Doctor Ettinger was
born in Allentown, Pa., November 8, 1860, the son of Major Amos and Lydia
H. (Laüdenschlager) Ettinger. The main features of his active career may
be summed up as follows: Prepared in private school and the academic
department of Muhlenberg College; A. B. (valedictorian), Muhlenberg
College, 1880; winner of junior oratorical prize; A. M., Muhlenberg
College, 1883; Ph. D., New York University, 1891; instructor in academic
department, 1881-84, and principal, 1884-92; professor of Latin in college
since 1892; member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity; alumni editor of
Muhlenberg, 1886-1911; fifteen years director of public schools, and
number of years president and later secretary of board of control;
secretary of Pennsylvania German Society; member of Pennsylvania
Historical Society, American Philological Society, American Historical
Society, National Geographic Society, Pennsylvania Society of New York;
president of Lehigh County Historical Society; joint editor of
“Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Lehigh Valley”; president Muhlenberg
Alumni Association; secretary Lehigh Prison Board; literary editor of
Allentown Morning Call; president of board of directors of Free Library.
August 17, 1899, Doctor Ettinger married Emma C. daughter of Gustav A. and
Emilie C. Aschbach.
