FRANCIS P. HUNSICKER, senior member of the firm of Hunsicker &
Co., wholesale and retail cigar amid tobacco dealers was born in
Heidelberg Township, Lehigh County, July 4, 1855, the son of Owen and
Sarah (Bittner) Hunsicker. He was educated in the public schools and in
the Weaversville Academy, Northampton County, Pa. In 1870 he came to
Allentown and learned the cigar making trade, which he followed until
1876, when he engaged in the tobacco business where the Hersh hardware
store is now located. In 1878 he removed to 781 Hamilton Street, and in
1911 to the Hunsicker building, a modern office structure of eleven
stories at 17-19 North Seventh Street. From its inception the firm met
with success and today enjoys the largest trade of any house in its line
in Lehigh County. Besides being a very capable business man, Mr. Hunsicker
is a public-spirited citizen. In 1896 he was elected to the board of
control and faithfully served in that body until 1911, when the new school
code affected a change. He was also elected one of the city’s nine
controllers. He is a member of Salem Reformed Church and prominently
identified with the following orders: Livingston Castle, No. 258, K. G.
E.; St. Alban Commandery, No. 46, Knights of Malta; Camp No. 406, P. 0. 8.
of A.; Franklin Chamber, No. 9, 0. K. of F.; Golden Chain Allen Temple,
No. 90, L. K. G. E.; Royal Arcanum; Modern Woodmen of America. In 1876 he
