Elmer F. Findley, general agent for the Girard
Life Insurance Company, with offices at 409 Butler County National Bank
Building, Butler, is a native of Pennsylvania. He was born September 29,
1882, in Somerset, Pennsylvania, and is a son of William Francis and
Catherine E. (Eizenbarth) Findley.
Catherine E. (Eizenbarth) Findley was born in Germany
and came to the United States when a young woman and settled in
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. William F. Findley, born in that
county, was a blacksmith by trade. He worked on the boats on the Ohio
River when Mark Twain was one of his fellow workers. Mr. Findley died in
May, 1910, and is buried in West Newton, Pennsylvania. His widow resides
in Butler. To this union seven children were born: Elmer F., the subject
of this sketch; William J., stationary engineer, West Elizabeth,
Pennsylvania; Elizabeth Katherine, married George Gilmore; she is deceased
and he lives at Coal Bluff, Pennsylvania; Margaret, Frederick, and Harry,
all deceased, and buried at West Newton, Pennsylvania; and James L., who
resides in Akron, Ohio.
Elmer F. Findley received a good education in the public schools of
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and upon leaving school worked on the
farm in Ligonier Valley for three years, then as a brakeman on the
Pennsylvania Railroad for one year. He then traveled for a year through
the West and in November, 1902, was employed by the Metropolitan Life
Insurance Company in the West Newton office. He was promoted to assistant
superintendent in 1906 and transferred to Washington, Pennsylvania, and in
1908 he was sent to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, as assistant superintendent.
In August, 1911, Mr. Findley resigned his position and removed to
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he expected to go into business, but was
prevented by ill health. He later removed to Zelienople, Butler County,
and assumed charge of the office of the Universal Health and Accident
Insurance Company, where he remained until September, 1913, when he came
to Butler and established a general insurance agency. On October 1, 1917,
he became general agent for the Girard Life Insurance Company, and also
has the agency for many other insurance companies. Mr. Findley is a member
of the Insurance Federation of Pennsylvania, chairman of the Life Section
of the Butler County Advisory Board, National Association of Life
Underwriters, and one of the organizers and the first president of the
Butler Life Underwriters Association, and is a member of its Board of
Directors.
On January 1, 1906, Mr. Findley was married to Miss
Mabel Rodham, a daughter of Joseph and Isabelle (Harrison) Rodham, both
deceased. Mr. Rodham was a coal operator, and a resident of Industry, Pa.
Mr. and Mrs. Findley had four children: Rodham E., born February 9, 1908,
died in 1914; Ruth F., Grace N., and Gladys I., all students.
Mr. Findley is a Democrat, a member of the Lions Club, Y. M. C.A., Butler
County Motor Association, Butler Board of Commerce, and American
Automobile Association. During the World War Mr. Findley served on the
district draft board and on the Butler County United
War Work Committee. He is a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and
one of the progressive and enterprising citizens of Butler County.
